Why Networking Isn’t Working For You

“I’m in all of the networking groups on Facebook, I’m a part of all of the mom groups like they told me to do, I got to networking events….but I’m not getting the clients/customers! Networking isn’t working for me!” 

 

Does this resonate with you, mama? I totally get it…networking is not easy. It’s nerve wracking, it’s confusing, sometimes we don’t know what to say, and we meet people but it doesn’t turn into sales.

 

I have a secret for you, sister. It doesn’t HAVE to be that hard and exhausting! It really comes down to a few mindset shifts and being prepared. So here are a few reasons why networking isn’t working.

 

7 Reasons Why Networking Isn’t Working For You

 

1. You are focused on numbers, not connection

I’m sorry to say it, but you are doomed from the start if you approach networking with numbers on your mind. 

 

And what’s even more disappointing is that…networking is NO fun if you take it too seriously! It can get stressful when you step into the networking space desperate for leads. And your vibe will be all off. 

 

Have fun, make friends, focus on connection, and the rest follows.

 

2. You are being spammy

Dropping in the DMs with a cold pitch isn’t helping anybody, nor is leading with a vague DM to solicit someone. Heading to a networking event planning to pitch without hearing people out first is a bad look. 

 

Just steer clear, sister! If you’ve been given the advice that you just put all the messages out there until you get the “yes,” RUN NOW! Your heart and your bank account are going to end up empty.

 

3. You are focused on quantity over quality

 

Again, with the numbers. Doing business and life with a core group of amazing, quality, and encouraging women is where the JOY lives. This core group of women will support you, lift you up, and SEND YOU LEADS.

 

Don’t spread yourself too thin when it comes to relationships. It’s not about quantity…and you’ll find if quantity is your focus, you’ll burn out quickly!

 

4. You are not being yourself

 

I’m guessing you started your business because you wanted to be your own boss, you wanted a lifestyle that suited you and your family, and you wanted your business to bring you more joy.

 

So if you’re putting a persona out into the world that isn’t you…you will start to resent the business that you built to love. 

 

Not only that…people will see right through inauthenticity. You won’t get far without being your true self.

 

5. You are not providing value

 

definition of "value" you in book with value highlighted in pinkYou are asking too much of people. Have you ever been on an email list or an Instagram feed that was all about “buy buy buy?” It’s like having your bucket emptied over and over with no new deposits.

 

Providing value…and more value…and more value…is what is going to get you noticed in your space. 

 

I challenge you to scroll through a facebook group once a week and give people the answers or advice that they’re looking for WITHOUT any expectations. 

 

6. You have no target audience

 

Another reason networking isn’t working for you is because you are not clear on who your target audience is. 

 

Knowing your client or customer avatar is SO important when it comes to messaging. There is a saying that goes, “If you’re talking to everyone, you’re talking to no one.” And it’s the truth because it’s a little like throwing spaghetti against the wall.  Identify who you’re talking to so that you can get your messaging ON POINT!

 

7. You don’t have a simple and compelling elevator pitch

Get your elevator pitch dialed in. When you can explain what you do, who you help, and how you help them in a sentence or two, you will begin to attract the right leads into your business.
